This summer, Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) teamed up with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Milwaukee Public Schools Foundation to host a Girls STEM Academy from Monday, July 29 to Friday, August 2. The Academy brought 28 MPS middle school girls together for a week of experiential learning, mentorship, and career exploration in the STEM fields – science, technology, engineering and math.
“We are committed to providing youth across Wisconsin access to programs that challenge and inspire them,” said Arvind Gopalratnam, Milwaukee Bucks Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility and Executive Director of the Milwaukee Bucks Foundation. “The Girls STEM Academy, which the Milwaukee Bucks are hosting with MSOE and the MPS Foundation, reflects this focus and allows Academy students an opportunity to grow and connect with professionals from each of our respective industries.”
In sessions led by MSOE faculty, students built their STEM skills through interactive lessons in coding and computer science, architecture and construction management, and biomedical engineering and medicine. Professionals from the Milwaukee Bucks, GE Healthcare, Eppstein Uhen Architects and Rockwell Automation introduced the girls to current applications of these skills and career pathways in STEM fields. Throughout the week, Academy students worked in small groups to research a real-world challenge, culminating in a presentation of their innovative solution to a panel of local professionals and innovators. At the end of the week, an awards dinner celebrated and recognized the girls and their hard work throughout the program.
