We know children have more questions than class time can answer. And since every child deserves access to comprehensive and accurate tutors, Jaliza Toliver, an MPS senior at James E. Groppi High School has designed an app that offers study help at any hour. The AI Power Personalized Tutoring App has transformed Jaliza into an entrepreneur and landed her a spot on “Project Pitch It,” a local TV show similar to ABC’s “Shark Tank” that airs throughout Wisconsin. It features a panel of business experts who decide which project to back with funding.
We spoke to Jaliza about her app and entrepreneurial ambitions…
1. What was the inspiration for your app?
Tutoring Kit came from wanting to help students get extra help with their studies. I saw students needing more support than what teachers could physically give.
2. How does your app work, and what features does it offer to students seeking tutoring and mentoring?
The app works by using AI, which is available 24/7. When you log in, it gives you a quiz to pinpoint where you’re struggling. Then it tailors its tutoring and mentoring to your specific needs to help you improve.
3. What challenges have you encountered developing the app?
Getting enough money to make the app was tough. We had to figure out where to get it from. We’ve tried things like asking investors and applying for grants.
4. Was there anyone in particular that you’d like to acknowledge for their help through your journey?
I’d like to give a big shoutout to my MPS advisor, Patricia Jacobs. I’d also like to thank my tutor Jackie Herd-Barber. Both of them provided invaluable support throughout every step of this journey by mentoring me and helping me prepare for important presentations. Their guidance and encouragement played a huge role in making Tutoring Kit a reality.
5. What advice would you give to your fellow students?
Trust and believe that you have something valuable to offer to the world—even small steps can lead to big changes. So, don’t be afraid to take that first step towards making a difference.
6. What’s next for you? What are your plans for after high school?
I’ve thought about college but I’m not sure if I want to go right away. Instead, I’m considering other paths to pursue my dreams. My ultimate goal is to become someone amazing who gives back to my community. Whether it’s through entrepreneurship, vocational training, or other avenues I’m determined to make a positive impact.
